An Asian handicap is a bet on the result after the bookmaker has handed one team a head start in goals or taken goals away from it, and the size of that head start decides whether a near miss loses your whole stake, half of it, or nothing at all. The number in brackets is the whole bet.

How do I win an Asian handicap bet?
You apply the bracketed number to the real score and see who is in front. Bet9ja's rules put it in one line: "Predict the winner in regular time taking in consideration the handicap in brackets." Regular time, so the ninety minutes and stoppage time, not a shoot-out.
What changes from line to line is what happens when you are close but wrong.
What does Asian handicap 0 mean?
It means the draw gives you your money back. The rule is written out: "Handicap Line 0 The team that wins by any margin is to be settled as the winning selection. In the event of a draw all tickets are void."
So a 0 line is the same shape as draw no bet. Pick a side, they win by one or by five, you are paid. The game ends level and the stake comes back.
What does a quarter line like 0.25 or 0.75 mean?
It splits your stake in two and settles each half on its own. Bet9ja: "Quarter ball (0.25; 0.75; 1.25 etc.) advantage can be settled as won/lost or half won/half lost while the other half of the stake is returned."
Four possible endings, then, rather than two. Won. Lost. Half won, with the rest refunded. Half lost, with the rest refunded. It is the only family of lines that can hand you back part of a losing bet, which is also why the price on a 0.25 looks worse than the price on a 0.5 next to it.
Read that as the bookmaker charging you for the insurance, because that is what it is.
What does a half line like 0.5 or 1.5 mean?
Nothing comes back. "Half ball (0.5; 1.5; 2.5 etc.) advantage can be settled as won or lost", and that is the end of it. A half-goal line cannot be matched exactly by a football scoreline, so there is no margin for the bet to land on.
This is the line most Nigerian punters are actually clicking when they take a handicap, and it behaves like an ordinary two-way bet.
What about a whole ball like 1 or 2?
Land on it exactly and the bet voids. "Whole ball (1; 2; 3 etc.) advantage can be settled as won, lost or void." Back a team at minus one and watch them win by a single goal, and the handicap makes the match level on paper, so your stake is returned rather than lost.
Does the half-time handicap work the same way?
Same three rules, shorter match. The half-time version is defined as predicting "the final two-way result of the first half of the match taking into account the handicap offered", with the identical quarter and half ball settlement underneath it. Only the first forty-five minutes count towards it.
One caveat. Only Bet9ja's current sport terms were read for this. SportyBet, 1xBet and betPawa all run Asian lines and the quarter-ball wording is usually close, but go and find the handicap section in your own operator's rules before you stake on a 0.75.
