What Is xG in Football Betting?

xG is expected goals: a number from 0 to 1 on every shot for how often that chance is scored. What 0.3 means, what a penalty is worth, and where it helps.

By JoeOdds Tips Desk · Updated 30 October 2026

xG stands for expected goals. Every shot in a match gets a number between 0 and 1 for how often a chance like that normally gets scored, and adding a team's shots together tells you how many goals its chances were worth. A side that loses 1-0 with 2.4 xG created enough to win.

How is xG calculated?

From what happened the last time thousands of players took a shot from the same spot in the same situation. FBref, one of the public sources, puts it as the probability that a shot ends in a goal based on the characteristics of that shot and the events leading up to it. Distance and angle do most of the work. Header or foot matters, and so does whether the shooter was one on one.

Nobody watching the game decides the number. That's the point of it.

What does 0.3 xG mean?

That a chance like that one goes in about three times in ten. So a striker who misses it hasn't done anything strange; he has done the ordinary thing, seven times out of ten.

This is where xG stops you betting on noise. One miss tells you nothing. Twenty chances worth 6.0 xG that produced two goals tells you a side is finishing badly, and finishing evens out.

How many xG is a penalty?

Between 0.75 and 0.80 depending on whose model you read, because every penalty is the same shot from the same spot. FBref quotes that range directly.

A game that finished 1-0 from a penalty, with the winning side creating nothing else, was a 0.8 xG performance. The scoreline says control. The number says one referee decision.

The fixtures we've rated off expected-goals data are the live table on the Understat football predictions page, and the goals calls that come out of them sit on over 2.5 goals. Both refresh each morning. Prices move once team news lands, so check Bet9ja or SportyBet before you stake.

What is a good xG in one match?

No fixed number, and any page that gives you one is guessing. 1.4 xG is a poor afternoon for a title side at home and a very good one for a team that's just come up. Compare it against what that team usually creates and what the opponent usually gives away.

Does xG help with over 2.5?

More than with anything else, and that's the honest limit of it. Goals markets are the one place where a number built from shots maps onto the bet you're placing. Two sides each averaging around 1.5 xG created and 1.5 conceded are a three-goal fixture on paper.

Where it helps least is picking winners. A team can out-create the opposition all night and lose to a set piece. Use it across a run of games, not one.

Where do I find xG for today's games?

Understat is the source most people mean, and it covers the top five European leagues. Our Understat predictions page carries the day's fixtures with that data applied, and everything else we've rated is on today's football predictions. You won't see xG beside the odds in your betting app, so look it up first.

Questions people ask

What does xGA mean?

Expected goals against: the same number for the chances a team gave up. A side with low xGA is defending well even when the scoreline says otherwise.

Can xG predict who wins?

Not one match. It tells you which side has been creating more, which is a different claim, and over a season it is the more reliable one.

Does xG count own goals?

No. An own goal is not a shot at the other team's net, so the models leave it out.

Is xG on SportyBet or Bet9ja?

Not on the bet slip. It's a statistics-site number, so check it before you open the app.

Which leagues have xG data?

The big European ones. The NPFL mostly does not, because nobody logs every shot in it.
