Because the bet is not settled until your bookmaker has an official result it trusts, and that arrives after the whistle rather than with it. Most slips clear within minutes. The ones that sit there are usually waiting on a statistics feed, a scoreline somebody has queried, or a match that never actually finished.
None of which your app tells you while you stare at it.
How long can it take for a bet to settle?
Bet9ja will not give you a number. Their help page puts it in one careful sentence: "Be assured that Bet9ja strives to settle all events as soon as we can. Nevertheless, in order for us to uphold the accuracy of the results we present to you, there may be cases where additional time is taken to seek official confirmation of results."
No clock anywhere. A second Bet9ja page is blunter about the reason: "After a game has finished, there is a working time needed to check the official results, to update the results and settle the bets."
So there is no deadline you can hold them to. Worth knowing before you refresh.
What does a pending bet actually mean?
That the market has no result attached to it yet. Your stake has already left your balance and the outcome column is simply empty.
It does not mean the bet lost. It also does not mean anybody is looking at it.
Why did four legs settle and one stay pending?
Because some markets read the scoreboard and some read a data feed.
Goals come straight off the result. Corners and cards do not. Bet9ja's rules say it twice, once for each market: "Corners are settled according to the official statistics provider" and "Cards are settled according to the official statistics provider." If that provider is slow to publish, or publishes a count the bookmaker wants to check, the corner leg waits while your goals legs are already done.
A mixed slip with corners or cards in it is the one most likely to hang.
Does a postponed match keep my bet pending?
Yes, and the rules put a deadline on it. From Bet9ja's general sport terms: "whenever an event is (i) officially postponed and/or (ii) interrupted, all related bets will remain valid if the event takes place and is completed by midnight (WAT) of the day following the date originally set for the match. If it does not take place or is not completed according to foregoing, all the bets related to that event will be deemed void within 24 hours."
Midnight the next day, Nigerian time, then up to another 24 hours to void it. That is where your two-day pending bet comes from. Nobody is ignoring the slip, the window has not closed. What happens after it does is a separate article: what happens if a football match is abandoned.
What if it never settles at all?
Check the bet exists on their side. Same rulebook: "Bets, which do not directly appear on Bet9ja's server, are not valid. If you are unsure about the validity of a bet, please check your Account or contact our Customer Service."
A slip that rendered on your screen but never reached the server is not a bet. Open your account history and look. If it is not there, that is the conversation to have, not a complaint about slow settlement.
Outright bets are not pending, they are just long
A league winner or top scorer bet is a different animal. Bet9ja settles those on "the completion of the indicated tournament and not necessarily the date shown on the website", so a title bet placed in August sits open until May by design.
One caveat. Only Bet9ja's rules were read here, nobody else's. On SportyBet or 1xBet the shape will be similar and the wording will not be, so go and find their settlement section.
